Benyamin's Blog

In honor of Christmas, I got on an essay published today in The Daily Beast. It’s a very highly regarded website in the media world created by Tina Brown. They usually only let famous writers on there, so it’s a pretty cool honor to have a story on there. Here’s the piece: Jesus Made Me a Better Jew. Hope you enjoy it.

I loved the article at The Daily Beast and was glad I visited as I had not heard about your book. I have even put up a blog posting at my nonprofit foundation’s site, even though it has nothing to do with anything I typically post about. I felt I had not given Chanukah a fair shake, so hence the post featuring the new Dreidel song and your book.

Your book looks to be a comic take, rather than the more biting one seen from Matt Taibbi’s articles when he went undercover with the Christian Right. His new Jan 2009 book should be quite fascinating (The Great Derangement: A Terrifying True Story of War, Politics, and Religion) as well. Have you ever communicated with him about your book?

I have spent the last year going to a Messianic Synagogue (Kehilat Ariel-in San Diego) and hanging with Rabbi Barney’s Dad playing tennis. Routinely getting beaten by this 78 yr old man-giving me alot to think about going kosher- me being 57. I have found a love and respect for the Jewish traditions mixed with the acceptance of Joshua as the Messiah. I am humbled and amazed at the tenacity of the Jews and the ignorance of the ‘Bible Belt’ Christians of these deep ties Christians have with the Jewish Traditions. I would think that every Christian worth his or her salt would thirst for more deeper understanding what Joshua lived through. But they don’t and I lament at my own very good evangelical church (Calvary Chapel in Vista, CA) with Mr. Levy at the Church Kiosk that he operates.(Knowing he would hold a much higher office in the Jewish Tradition)I appreciate you for your stand and attempt to understand the Christians in America. They seem to be as out of sync with the world as the Jews are. I think that makes us be able to understand each other a little better than most but realize also that it will always fill like something is missing. I can only say as a gentile the ‘turn on’ I experienced the first time I witnessed the joy and excitement that a Jewish woman showed for the Torah and the Law. Freeing and pretty weird. I don’t know if you accepted that the Messiah has come or not, I hope you have given it some thought, or maybe I am missing the point and you are a full blown Messianic Jew. I have learned one thing this past year and that is that Jews need to be there for the Christians and not the Christians for the Jews; Because how in the world can we be ‘grafted’ to the trunk if you were not. God Bless you and hope you have a Great Christmas, as for me, I and my family celebrate Chan aka for the first time and the kids and I love it- we also watch the Christmas stuff also. The two are as one in our home.

“My Jesus Year” was a Christmas gift from my daughter and the first book I’ve read this year (2009).

I am a Catholic (Traditional - yep, bring back the Tridentine Mass and all) and I just want to say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading “My Jesus Year.” It should be nominated for the “Best Book of the Year” award!

Thank you (for writing the book) and God bless you and your family!

I’m impressed! It’s so sad more people don’t know about this place, this had just what I needed to know

I really doubt I could keep up with maintaining a website like yours! Wonderful piece of work, I truly would like to see you maintain it for a long time.

Well I’m going to have to look up a couple more things, but this is a really good spring board.
