Benyamin's Blog
When you hear there’s a Jehovah’s Witness Apocalypse Convention in town, you don’t sit on the sidelines and miss out. You get up and go. So I dusted off my church-hopping shoes and headed out there. Any by out there, I mean out there. 30,000 Jehovah’s Witnesses packed into a local arena for three days of seminars, symposiums, and services. It was certainly an eye-opening experience -- I had no clue Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t vote or celebrate holidays. Once I digest it all, I’m going to write up a longer essay about the convention which I’ll eventually post here. For now, just wanted to share the photo above of the crowd.Follow My Jesus Year on Twitter.

I hope you enjoyed the “Keep on the Watch” district convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Atlanta as I did in Ontario, Canada. I doubt it was what you expected before walking in. Going by the Canadian program I saw, it was much less adventurous than a skeptical visitor might have dreamed.
By your blog article title, I suspect you thought you might hear about the right cement mix for your backyard bunker. The convention I attended was apocalyptic in the Greek sense of being ‘revealing’, rather than the English sense of catastrophe. There was even material on why Christians can be confident that the Biblical “Armageddon” will not be a nuclear holocaust but actually have positive outcomes---perhaps a great disappointment for those who prefer their religion on the depressing side.
You probably heard lectures on the importance of remaining spiritually aware in an increasingly secular world and reminders that God is not remote but DOES have an interest in human affairs---even in us personally; a message that people of many faiths could find a way to appreciate.
It could be a letdown if you were expecting brimstone but rather satisfying if one was looking for something a bit more thoughtful. I’ve attended in the past, I’m glad I went this year again, and hopefully I’ll be there again next year.
I just linked to your article from our site. I’m sure 30,000 is a bit of a stretch most conventions fall in the 3,000 to 6,000 range.
Looking forward to the full report!
Wasn’t it Shmuel Boteach who said the Watchtower religion kept Michael Jackson humble?
I just finished reading your Book. I like “fish our of water” stories where something is experienced from a different perspective. I’ve read about a white man disguised as black, a woman as a man and an African Muslim woman who emigrated to the Netherlands. I used to live in Brooklyn Heights and took a peek once into a small, crowded basement synagogue.
I enjoyed your humor and looked forward to your opinions of Christendom’s churches. I was disappointed and amazed that you hadn’t visited a Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, which is my faith. I was looking forward to seeing one of our meetings through your eyes. I checked your website and was very happy to see that you attended the District Assembly in Atlanta. It was surprising you did this, because I thought your investigations of other faiths would stop when the year was up. Did you ever write a follow-up on your thoughts about the Assembly like you mentioned you would? I would love to read it.
Thank you Mr. Cohen
great post here, I really learned a lot. I have been teaching myself iPhone programming for a few of months now. I’m thinking of switching to Android, though, because dealing with Apple’s approach is kind of a hassle.
Cool, there is actually some great facts on this blog some of my friends just might find this relevant, I must send them a link, thank you.
There is so much of valuable information in your blog. I can see that you are putting a lot of time and effort into your blog! Last night I was reading an article on apartment valencia, trust me I was completely carried away by the way it was written neatly. I feel the blogging is spreading its wings rapidly also providing lot of useful information.
Michael Jackson is definitely among the finest artists in history. I still can’t believe he’s gone.
Thanks for making such a killer blog. I come on here all the time and am floored with the fresh information here.
Wow... good information.
